Future Developments

Shellharbour STP is approaching the limit of its hydraulic capacity and dry weather overflow discharges (where overflow is defined by Sydney Water to be effluent with a faecal coliform level greater than 150cfu/100ml) of secondary treatment already occur. A temporary bypass channel was commissioned in January 1998 to retain dry weather overflows (up to 90KL) and then return effluent through the secondary treatment process during lower flow periods. In future:

  • All dry weather STP overflow discharges are expected to be eliminated using offline storage.

  • Work on permanent storage (5250KL capacity) is currently under construction and was expected to be finalised by May 1998 (Sydney Water Corporation 1998j).

  • Sydney Water Corporation’s (1998j) sewage overflow EIS indicated that disinfection facilities would be increased to ensure only 45 discharges in 10 years were released without disinfection to the 150cfu/100mL standard.

  • Line screens were also to be installed.
